The Function of Thyroid Gland – The Master Gland

The thyroid is a butterfly-molded organ situated on the front and middle of your neck. You can survive without the actual gland, but not without the essential thyroid hormones that it produces. These key hormones control the metabolic rate of every organ in the body, from heart rate, brain function, adrenal hormones, sex hormones, growth development and body temperature. Low levels of these hormones will wreak havoc on the body and make you feel miserable.

Experts often underestimate how many thyroid patients exist in the United States. Most seem to agree there are about 20 million Americans, while some organizations estimate 27 million. Thirteen million of them are undiagnosed. Around 200 million people worldwide have some form of thyroid disease, and 60% of those with thyroid disease don’t even know about it. Undiagnosed hypothyroidism can put people at risk for serious health issues, such as diabetes. infertility, high blood pressure, depression, osteoporosis, heart disease, gynecological problems, and other diseases. Women are much more likely to suffer from thyroid disorders than men.

How Does The Thyroid Gland Function With Other Systems?

The thyroid organ gets activated to deliver thyroid hormones into the circulatory system through a sign sent from the pituitary organ at the base of our brains called the TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone). Even though the thyroid is part of the endocrine system, TSH is actually a pituitary hormone, not a thyroid hormone. Blood test to determine TSH levels is used to measure the strength of the signal being sent to the thyroid. It is essential to determine how the thyroid gland translates the TSH signal in order to release enough thyroid hormones. Besides, regardless of whether the thyroid gland discharges hormones into the bloodstream, they need to be absorbed appropriately, or the individual will remain hypothyroid. In some cases, the pituitary doesn’t send the TSH signal at all.

The Main Thyroid Hormones—T4 & T3

The primary metabolic hormones of the thyroid gland are called T4 (thyroxine) and T3 (triiodothyronine). These are the only important ones when it comes to thyroid health. Both are measurable by blood tests. About 80% of T4, and 7–20% of T3 is released by the thyroid.

T4 is a prohormone, and its purpose is to convert into the biologically active thyroid hormone T3. T3 is the energy to the body to keep us functioning. When the pituitary senses a lack of T4 and T3 in the blood, it sends the TSH signal to the thyroid to produce more thyroid hormones. Unfortunately, the thyroid does not always cooperate. Often, it releases insufficient levels of hormone.

T3 Thyroid Function

T3 (triiodothyronine) is one of the most important hormones that exists in the body. It controls essential body functions, such as energy, heart rate, blood pressure, fat burning, brain function, body temperature, and more. Having sufficient T3 levels is what regulates and body’s metabolism and fat burning process. T3 is the thing that keeps your internal heat level at a normal of 98.6°F in healthy people.

In fact, T3 is so powerful, the body produces thyroid hormone T4 to protect you from the overwhelming energy of T3. T4 is either released directly from the thyroid gland, or ingested as thyroid hormone replacement, is then converted to essential T3. We can’t survive without T3, and having low levels of this hormone can cause various problems in the body

Thyroid Hormone Function

Every day, the thyroid gland releases the following hormones: T4, T3, T2, T1 & calcitonin.
• T4: 80–93% of what your thyroid gland produces. The main function of T4 is to convert into the biologically active hormone T3. Approximately 40–50% if the T4 converts into T3.
• T3: 7–20% of total production by the thyroid gland. The vast majority of T3 in the body is produced when T4 loses one of its molecules and converts to T3
• T2: Involved in the production of an enzyme called deiodinase, which helps covert T4 to T3.
• T1: Keeps balance with thyroid hormone production.
• Calcitonin: produced by the thyroid, its main function is to regulate calcium metabolism in the body
The main function of the thyroid gland is to convert T4 to adequate levels of T3 to keep the body functioning at optimal levels. T4 by itself is useless, unless it is converted to T3. In fact, T1, T2 and calcitonin are not essential for optimal body function. Most thyroid hormone replacement medications don’t contain these hormones. People who are on T3-only thyroid hormone replacement, with zero T4 in their system for many years, can live perfectly healthy lives.

T4 Thyroid Function

T4 to T3 conversion occurs in the thyroid, kidneys, liver with the assistance of an enzyme called D1 deiodinase. A small percentage of the T4 to T3 conversion also takes place in the gut – but only of enough good bacteria is present. A mineral called selenium is also essential in the T4 to T3 conversion process. Remaining T4 hormone that is not converted to T3, is then converted to a biologically inactive Reverse T3. It is then used to remove excess T4 from the body. If the T4, whether released by the thyroid gland or taken orally, fails to convert to T3, you will experience the symptoms of hypothyroidism.

T4 to T3 Conversion Problems

Bioavailability is essential in the proper conversion of T4 to T3. Even if your thyroid is producing enough T4 (or orally consumed in case of hypothyroid patients), if it doesn’t properly convert to T3, it will cause harm to the body. You will probably experience symptoms of hypothyroidism. Many conditions can cause T4 to T3 conversion problems, such as blood sugar issues, adrenal dysfunction, malfunctioning liver, poor diet, and vitamin/mineral deficiencies. Excessive exercise and dieting dieting can also contribute to the T4 to T3 conversion problems because the body slows down thyroid hormone production to conserve energy. Very intense cardiovascular workouts can negatively impact thyroid function by disturbing adrenal and glucose metabolism, both of which are crucial to thyroid health.

Top Hypothyroidism Causes

1. The pituitary gland does not produce enough TSH hormone
2. The thyroid gland does not release adequate levels of T4 and T3 in response to the TSH hormone production
3. T4 does not convert into enough T3 hormone.
4. T4 is converting into the inactive Reverse T3 hormone.
5. Hashimoto’s disease, which is an autoimmune disorder where the body produces antibodies that attack the thyroid gland

Top Hyperthyroidism Causes

1. Graves’ disease, by far the top cause of hyperthyroidism, is an autoimmune disorder where the body produces antibodies that cause the thyroid to malfunction by producing more thyroid hormones that the body needs.
2. Larger than needed thyroid hormones produced for other reasons. For example, thyroid nodules and excessive iodine consumption
3. Consuming excessive amounts of thyroid replacement hormones.

Anti-Thyroid Dangers

There are many external factors that can disturb the thyroid’s function. Radiation, poor diet, nutrient deficiencies, adrenal imbalances, stress, inadequate sleep, and soy consumption, can all reduce the thyroid’s ability operate optimally. Undiagnosed or untreated hypothyroidism can cause many different health issues, including cancer, type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance, depression, high cholesterol, heart disease, and psychological issues.
